A Good End

John Greaves

A confident Cambridge South 4th team turned up at St Ives ready to round off a successful league season by delivering a good win. So that's what they did, putting four past the home team with no reply.

A dominant first half did the trick, starting with an Ash Dookun mazy dribble capped by the man himself slotting the ball confidently into the net from range. South had the bulk of possession and were able to demonstrate their qualities with lovely passing moves, using the width of the pitch. Further rewards came from a cracker of a shot from Alex Pashley which was nipped by the end of Rob Barton's stick and a cross/shot from wide on the right by Peter Creed, helped into the goal by a generous-spirited St Ives defender.

The foot came off the gas a bit after the break and the only goal of the half came from a trademark John Greaves effort from five yards out, as the skipper thwacked the ball netwards with a clinical first touch. Other less clinical touches sent the ball narrowly wide on a couple of other occasions. It was good for the team to get the ball into the D so frequently, with Peter Creed using his pace to get to the byline and midfield maestros Dookan and Pashley weaving their magic throughout.

Man of the match was the faultless Andy Thomas in goal, keeping a clean sheet. Lemon-winner was the absent Stu Creed, who prepared for the game by having cricket balls hurled at him, one of which collided with his leg rather than the more conventional cricket bat. The ball won.

So the league season ends with the 4ths in second place, just missing out on promotion due to some technicality involving only the league champions stepping up to 5NW. Unless there is another of those frequent league reshuffles, that is.

Didn't even turn up. Some lame excuse about an orange.
