WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE. I SAID, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!

Lou Tonkin

And so the day arrived. Despite last week's win confirming promotion to Div 2, there were still so many questions to answer… Would the L1s go up as champions? Could we score over one hundred goals for the second season running? And most importantly, would Jan's rumour of Loopy playing up front really come to pass? Turns out the answer to that last one was easy enough: no. Dammit…

Anyway, back to the action… Standing in our way this week were Wisbech 3s, who have had a tough season but have improved in recent weeks, and so the pre-match preamble was about high confidence and low complacency. Just one more point needed for top spot. Just four more goals for the ton.

At this point, your narrator should probably point out the questionable wisdom of asking the keeper to write the match report for a thirteen-nil win. Let's see what I can remember…

A combination of great link up play around the D and smooth short corner routines meant that we were eight-nil up at half-time; it was clear that the Mission had been Accomplished. Now, we could relax a little for the second half and enjoy the game. Which LoM Emma-Rose took a little too seriously, as she displayed a stunning pirouette around and over ball, ending up spreadeagled on the pitch on the edge of the D. Too relaxed, thought the captain (and this week's MoM), who decided to show the forwards how it was done for the tenth goal, and her second of the game; a cracking strike from the top of the D nestling perfectly in the bottom right corner, giving us the quote of the day - “It was sweet as a nut!” There was still time for more goals, and so the game ended with thirteen from six different scorers (hat-tricks for Kim and Sophie, a brace each for Izzy, Amalia and Lou, and a single from Alison), which proves just how much of a team performance this was (except for Loopy, who spent most of her time enjoying the early Spring weather and hoping that it wouldn't start raining…).

Honourable mention should go to Wisbech, who battled from start to finish, forced us to play some good hockey to get around their defence and displayed some nice play themselves; a team full of young players who have a great hockey future ahead of them.

But at last, the L1s can finally say, in the words of Robyn Mc:

We. Are. Top of the League. I said, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!

A spectacular tumble way after the ball had gone, but conveniently right in front of the South supporters.
