Well Done, Bury

Lydia Neil

The L3s set off bright and early for our trip over to league leaders, Bury. With a fluctuating team sheet and last minute illness, Captain Laura managed to organise us into a good formation (I believe, fifth version). We knew it would be tough: Bury are well organised, strong in defence and pose an attacking threat. Pre-match tactical discussion centred around restricting Bury’s chances.

First half, (almost) everything went to plan. South were organised, worked well as a team and kept composure on the ball. Bury were unable to penetrate behind the defensive line, Hayley and Meg holding the middle with support from Laura and Ani out wide. Pippa, Ash, and Catriona were creating good movement with the ball, with Lou, Polly and Nicole involved with everything in midfield.

Bury created only a handful of clear cut chances in the first half, eventually scoring from a short – the ball slipped quickly left for a hard strike through the legs of wrong-footed keeper, Lydia. This was somewhat redeemed only a few minutes later when another Bury short was awarded and the resulting strike was this time met with a strong gloved save to turn it behind for a long corner. Half time sweeties were enjoyed with South feeling pleased with restricting Burys chances and creating some opportunities of our own.

The second half began much the same. Bury continued to press and South stood firm, working well together to stop threats. We had some brilliant chances to draw level, Emily, Ash and Catriona all doing well to put the pressure on Bury. Unfortunately the sustained pressure took its toll and South conceded several goals in quick succession. Bury were made to work hard for the chances though and they were finished well, including a reverse stick deflection at the back post and some pin-point accurate shooting. This was clearly a good result for them as deserved champions.

The result doesn’t tell the whole story for South though, who all worked incredibly hard as a team, keeping skilful players quiet for much of the match and creating some very good chances to score. This was certainly reflected in the MoM votes; nine players nominated, with Polly, Ani and Hayley tied for first place. Special mentions for Hayley, playing in a new position, and Kelly, playing her first ever hockey match after two weeks training! LoM was picked up by Nicole, for almost forgetting her stick, although Ani nearly got it for losing hers in the D (she did try to play on…). Well done to the whole team. Bring on the last game next week!
