Spring Hockey in the Sun!

Kendra Seed

So, the penultimate match of the season and the sun was shining as the L2s' headed east to Newmarket. With many nursing cake-hangovers after Katie's birthday dinner the night before, it's little surprise that the warm up was sluggish to say the least! We were having such little success in finding the goal during a drill that Emma sat down in protest.

Fortunately the bad dress rehearsal was followed by a lovely team performance that resulted in plenty of balls finding the back of the net; twelve in all, and Emma was able to keep sitting down as a young, inexperienced Newmarket team struggled to keep possession or pose much of a danger to the back line. In fact, just to make sure that the defence didn't just start sunbathing, Dani switched the team around so that nearly everyone had a chance to take a shot. Meg's exciting foray into the front line gave her a first goal in thirteen years and skipper Dani also showed us how it is done with a cracking goal towards the end of the match.

Throughout the game there was some great passing play with some fantastic drives down the wings by Cath, Mel and Katie, some good passing in and around the D and plenty of hard-fought rebounds. The Newmarket goalie fought hard to keep us out and really had a wonderful match, saving numerous shots and frustrating all the forwards. Up front, Katherine played another storming match, scoring once but playing an instrumental role in many others (we're so pleased you've joined the club! No, you can't have her, 1s…) Lauren took a hat-trick of goals, playing particularly well on the post and knocking in a fantastic deflection. Kendra kept herself in the running for 2s' Goal Queen by bagging 5 goals, leaving her and Izzy neck and neck on 25 goals each as we go into the final match next weekend.

There were a few Lemon moments, including Katie's exclamation of, "Where's my stick?" as we started the second half, but the accolade went (again) to Emma, this time for her unorthodox parking on the pavement.

All credit to the young Newmarket team for persevering right to the end of the match and for a delicious match tea! Next week, the long awaited rematch against their 3s team. Will they bring a goalkeeper?!
