MV 4-1 Peterborough Town Mens Veterans

Fielding their strongest side of the season so far, the Vets were hoping for their first “real” league win of the season.

Starting fast and with determination, Cambridge South quickly started to control the midfield with Phil Smith, Geoff Butcher, Steve Fleck and Piyush Jani all playing well as a unit. Up front, Richard Bettison and Roger Craigen were causing problems. Their first goal came from a good break from Steve which saw Roger’s reverse stick flick beat the goalie and was goal-bound when Richard knocked it home from 6” – even he can’t miss from that range!

Peterborough fought back but the defence of Peter Kemp, Steve Garwood, Dave Carswell and Steve Riches broke down most of their attacks, leaving Jim Sutcliffe with nothing too strenuous to do.

South’s second goal came as the result of more excellent teamwork, with Steve F the scorer.

So half time came with South leading two-nil; a good first thirty-five minutes with Cambridge playing well as a unit.

Peterborough came out hard in the second half and soon pulled a goal back after a dubious decision gave them a free hit just outside the area. They continued to exert pressure after this but the defence held out and gradually South regained control and extended their lead with a second goal for Richard following good move down the right from Piyush and Steve F.

Peterborough fought back again and in a spell of eight short corners in fewer minutes, Jim was called on to make a couple of excellent saves. However, South rallied yet again and the last ten minutes saw them dominate the play with the defence being able to push up towards the halfway line as they had done in the first half. This pressure told and Richard rounded of his hat-trick.

So a good team performance saw CS win four-one against a previously unbeaten Peterborough team – bring on Milton Keynes next week.
