Men's 2nds lose to Pelicans 3

Due to a mix-up a team of only ten players made the trip north to Kings Lynn for this game. On the way up, the driving rain and high winds plus the news on the radio of various groups of soft professional footballers opting for a quiet day by the fireside had some worried about the fixture's chance of going ahead. Not Sanjay, however, who slept soundly for almost the entire journey. He had missed the last train back from London and ended up in a sleeping bag on an extremely hard floor. At least, that was the excuse…

On arrival in Lynn it was soon clear the match would go ahead, as the rain stopped almost on cue. South took the change in the weather as a sign that their fortunes were generally improving and once again set about dominating a first half. This pressure soon lead to a lead when South's first short corner provoked a goalmouth scramble from which Dan Adlington's shot was kicked away from off (behind?) the line. The Pelicans player, exemplifying the spirit the game would be played in, owned up to his offence, and Rob Barton neatly put the penalty flick in the bottom right of the goal.

South continued to push on before the interval as the defence superbly marshalled by former Pelican, Matt Murray, didn't let a single direct shot at Andy Bleach, once again in the pads.

As last week, half time saw a change around in the balance of the match. Pelicans began to move the ball around with greater purpose and at times South's fitness began to flag as the ten men attempted to cover the spaces left. However, South were still creating good chances of their own, especially when one fine bit of interplay down the right between Dan Adlington, Sanjay Agarwala and Jonny Tostevin saw Danny worked into a clear goalscoring position. Unfortunately his shot was skewed wide. Another close thing came when a short corner was driven to just wide of the left post from where captain John Greaves (hobbling on manfully despite a sprained ankle from early in the match) just failed to convert.

However, Pelicans' play, backed by the strong wind, saw them penetrating more often into South's D, drawing a number of important saving tackles from Matt Murray and Rob Barton. This pressure resulted in an equaliser when a quickly taken free hit inside the twenty-five caught South napping, allowing an unmarked forward to sweep home.

Inside the last ten minutes South's fitness was really suffering and the shape of the team was lost. Pelicans took advantage to net a second when a short corner routine broke off a defensive foot ("broke off" as in deflected, not as in detached) to an unmarked forward. His shot through legs beat the unsighted Bleach for a barely deserved winner.

Pelicans were forgiven their win though, on account of the excellent post-match grub (spaghetti bolognese, loads of garlic bread, fresh tea and mince pies), and the friendly manner in which the game had been played. A good work out before the Christmas season kicks-in.
