Men's 2nds destroy Letchworth M5

CSHC 2nds continued the previous week's good work by demolishing a competent Letchworth side with a consistent seventy minutes of good hockey. Although CSHC started with ten men, goal king Dan Adlington grabbed an early goal out of a goal mouth melee through his persistence in forcing the ball in after the defence repelled his initial shots.

Soon after goalkeeper Poole saw some unexpected action as he and sweeper Rob Garrett clashed, leaving him with a cut lip and broken tooth. Bloodied but unbowed, Poole carried on with his usual dominant display. Eleventh man Matt Murray then arrived, having travelled in especially from London, and announced his presence with a brace of goals; his first a spectacular solo effort involving his trademark reverse stickwork followed by a rasping hit from a well worked Greaves-Korstanje-Murray short corner move.

The goals continued to flow and two more were added before half time, from James Pope with a dazzling solo run through most of the Letchworth defence and then from another well-worked short corner routine, with Korstanje firing the ball to John Greaves lurking by the near post after taking the corner to drag it back and push it coolly into the net.

After half time Letchworth scored a surprising goal as the undermanned home defences were caught napping, but South were soon back in the groove with yet another variation on their short corner routine. This time it was Greaves to Murray to Greaves then across to the grateful Andy Lewis waiting by the penalty spot to slot the ball home. Vincent Korstanje grabbed a seventh with a straightforward blast from the top of the D off another short, then Lewis started and finished a great move up the whole pitch involving Murray and Adlington, ending with a cracking shot giving the keeper no chance. Just before this, Poole was called upon to save a penalty, which he did..as we knew he would.

Still the goals kept coming, as South continued to attack skilfully and sensibly, using all the team well. Adlington got his second from a pinpoint (editorial licence - Ed) Greaves cross picking him out in front of an empty net, and then Greaves had the final touch of the game by turning a long range Mark Jackson effort goalwards to get the home side into double figures.
