M1 1-1 Cambridge University Mens 3

A spirited performance by Cambridge South saw them overcome a couple of injuries to key players and earn a creditable one-one draw away to high flying Cambridge University 3rds on Saturday.

Cambridge South initially started brightly, moving the ball around well and keeping the University on the back foot. However, the students soon started to assert themselves, which set the tone for much of the 1st half. Cambridge South's situation wasn't helped when first key midfielder Matt Readman had to go off with a leg injury and then Andy Rose received a heavy blow on the knee that forced him off temporarily. However, despite the possession they had and the disruption to their opposition, University were not able to create more than a couple of half chances. In fact, generally the game was proving a little stop-start at this stage, with neither side being especially fluent, and it was not surprising that half time was reached with the score nil-nil.

The second half started in much the same vein, with the University putting on most of the pressure but being unable to turn that into goals. Eventually however, a mistake by South on the edge of their D allowed University to break the deadlock with a well taken goal that gave the keeper no chance.

Now needing to push for an equaliser, South then had one of their most productive spells, moving the ball around well, particularly on the right side through Andy Rose and Rob Sprawson. They got the reward that their improved efforts deserved ten minutes from time when a fine strike from Rob Sprawson from a short corner defeated the University keeper for an equalising score. This proved the catalyst for a final onslaught from the home side to re-establish their lead but heroic defending, notably from excellent left back James Francis, kept them at bay and ensured the teams shared the spoils.
