M1 0-1 Cambridge Nomads Mens 2

Cambridge South suffered a disappointing one-nil defeat to local rivals Cambridge Nomads at the weekend.

Following good performances on the previous two weeks, South would have been confident of continuing their good form at home to a Nomads side below them in the league, but the absence of half a dozen key players meant that it was a far from full strength side that took to the pitch.

It was Nomads who got off to the better start, with fast breaks causing problems for the South defence early on. Only wasteful finishing and some desperate defending prevented a score. Although South gradually got into the match as the half wore on, it was Nomads who continued to look the more dangerous team, and they deserved to take the lead late in the first half after a well worked move.

The second half started more brightly for South, and they nearly got an equaliser from the re-start, when an excellent cross from the right was nearly turned in by skipper Chris Graveling. This set the tone for much of the half, with South doing most of the pressing and Nomads responding with fast counterattacks. In one of these attacks, Nomads were unlucky when a fine shot hit the post.

In the final quarter, South pushed ever harder for an equaliser, but although South created a number of half chances and earned several short corners, no goal was forthcoming. The nearest they came was when Rob Hay was thwarted from close range by the Nomads keeper.

The result was a deserved one for Nomads, who played some good hockey, but a frustrating one for South, who continue to show great inconsistency in their performances.
