M1 1-2 Long Sutton Mens 2

An improved performance from Cambridge South, particularly in the second half, still did not mean that the losing habit was broken against high-flying Long Sutton II's at the Perse on Saturday.

After the first twenty minutes, things looked very ominous for the home side. Fielding an experimental line up, with a new strike force and skipper Chris Graveling moving into the defence, South were optimistic of an improved showing. However, the slick attacks of the opposition soon had them is trouble, and Long Sutton soon took the lead with a sharp shot from their lively centre forward. Continued pressure from Long Sutton soon brought a second goal, when a shot was half saved by goalie Steve Parker and a Sutton player was first to the loose ball to turn it into the net. Long Sutton continued to have the better of the play up to half time, but no further goals resulted.

The second half was very different to the first however. Long Sutton seemed to sit on their lead and South got more and more into the game. Richard Philpott was lively down the right flank, Chris Graveling gave nothing away at the back, and generally South dominated. Unfortunately, their only reward came with an excellent individual goal from Steve Fleck with about ten minutes to go. This goal prompted a frantic push for an equaliser but none was forthcoming. Thus the final score remained at two-one to the visitors.

South now need to find a way of reproducing their second half performance for the whole match in order to stand a chance of picking up much-needed points.
