M2 6-0 Cambridge Nomads Mens 4

The weather may have been miserable but the hockey certainly wasn't. One of Cambridge South 2nds' best displays of the season saw them to a comfortable away victory against local rivals Nomads. The goals came from a variety of moves; the first from the productive right wing channel as Greaves found Lockhart at the back post with a pinpoint cross. A second should have followed as a Nomads defender stopped a certain goal on the line with a well placed boot but sadly the resulting penalty was well saved. Shortly before half time Barton, now re-finding his eye for goal, managed to dribble into the D, draw the defender and place a reverse stick special into the corner of the net.

Nomads tried to respond but the away defence was solid as usual and the returning Bailey showed how to stop a ball on the line…with his stick.

In the second half the Greaves-Lockhart combination struck again, this time with a sharp Greaves pass across goal after a bit of a melee, for Lockhart to score from close in. Lockhart unselfishly gave Barton his second after a fine passing move up the middle. The midfield were by now dominant, with the calm Korstanje and newcomer Marston providing great service to the forwards, with Lewis in particular looking dangerous every time he got the ball. Lockhart and Greaves provided the width and enabled Cambridge South to exploit the space well with many passing moves.

The fifth goal came from a quickly taken Greaves free hit, picking out the lurking Barton from long distance, for Barton to wrong-foot his marker and score confidently. Greaves himself was unlucky not to score, especially with one diving effort worthy of an Oscar. Barton wrapped things up after the effective Creed dribbled up field and shot purposefully, only for Barton to deflect the ball into an empty net.

Man of the Match was Lewis, who epitomised the Cambridge South effort and didn't give Nomads any peace throughout, with his fine attacking display.
