M3 0-4 Ely City Mens 3

The Cambridge South 3rds team consisted of the remnants the 2nds team chose to leave behind (only joking, David!)

Ely fielded a strong side of experienced old geezers and sprightly young nippers. They started to splay the ball around in a tidy fashion. South remained intact, with some belligerent defending and goalkeeping. Hannes Roux showing a burgeoning career between the sticks is only a side-shuffle away!

Ely's first goal was the product of neat inter-play and clinical finishing. South's heads did not drop and continued to press forward, especially through Dijkstra who had an impressive game as the left forward link who was supported very well by the vastly improved David Bridge.

Ely continued to surge forward to add to their goal difference and were thwarted by "Snuffler" Roux getting down almost as well as "Daft Ears" Benedikz. When their attacks broke down it was nearly always Mark Jackson who was at the heart of the tackling. His subsequent distribution with weighty passes was a lesson to us all and was quite superb.

The second Ely goal was only a matter of time as they started to dominate. South were bright throughout and maintained a positive approach, which was refreshing to see.

Matt Heap, playing his first game for the club, found himself drawn in from his wing position in an attempt to get stuck in the action. This came in the second half when a re-arranging of positions saw him acquit himself very well in defence: the club should hold on to this young lad as one for the future.

Two more opportunist goals followed as a result of defensive mix ups, for Ely.

Will Marston, with one eye on the Ipswich comeback of the year, was buzzing in midfield. Centre forward Lewis's marker was also buzzing like a fruit fly around him until he swatted him with his stick! An unusual way of dealing with an over-attentive marker but perhaps not the most legal or advised! His replacement was some five year old who sadly was quite good.

A good run out for some players short of match practice, this game was played with great spirit and given the scoreline could have been demoralising but a lot was gained from this experimental side.

Man of the match goes to Hannes Roux for stepping into the goalkeeping void and David Bridge, a player who has changed so much in the past few years to be a solid performer.
