Can Anyone Tell Me Who Scored?

In theory, this match report should be the most factually accurate of the season since all I had to do was watch and take notes from the sidelines. Alas, this only occurred to me mid-way through the game so the first half details may be a little vague, but I think it went something like this…

The St Ives team started strongly, putting the home defence under immediate pressure which they ably contained until the arrival of M4s' captain and prolific goal scorer, Greaves, on the touchline. This clearly upset the home side's composure and allowed the away team to find the back of the net almost immediately. This was followed shortly by another St Ives strike. The third goal came as goalkeeper Thomas made an early dive to block an incoming shot only for the ball to be deflected on to the stick of a St Ives player, who neatly lifted it over the stranded keeper and into the back of the net.

Guest captain Creed Senior’s half time talk clearly did the trick as the home team came out on the offensive with man of the match Creed Junior taking on the St Ives defence, supported by South debutants Smith and Haseler. Eventually the breakthrough came, with South being awarded a short corner which was fired past the stranded goalkeeper by Creed Senior, only to be disallowed for not leaving the D. Undaunted, South maintained the pressure, frequently counter-attacking as the away team pushed forward, securing a string of short corners. The breakthrough came when centre forward Raikes found himself on the end of a nicely weighted cross, which he dispatched with ease. This was followed by a second from a well-executed short corner.

In spite of sustained pressure from the home team, St Ives grabbed a couple more goals, making the final score five-two.

Despite the scoreline, a spirited performance by a talented M5s team: well done, guys!

Unanimously chosen by the touchline pundits for providing the pace and skill that left the St Ives defence stranded.

For forgetting to take notes for the match report.
