Men's 3rds beat Peterborough Town 5

Cambridge South ended their poor run of form in fine style by out-classing a strong Peterborough side that contained a number of junior county and East players.

South fielded almost the strongest side their squad allowed and from the starting whistle they looked sharp and committed, wrestling the ball away from the Peterborough players. South pushed forward from the start and their wingers created several good chances. South continued to look most dangerous when they got the ball wide to Finn Johnson and David Bridge, whose crosses caused constant confusion in the opponents D. Nick Wong marked his return to the 3rds with a tireless display of running, and was a constant threat to the opposition.

Although caught on the back foot, Peterborough always looked dangerous and keeper Will Benedikz was required to make one saving by diving at the feet of the oncoming striker. A second goal chance was narrowly missed when Peterborough shot high and wide after an inventive short corner routine.

South dominated the first half and their much-deserved goal eventually came via a short corner. Lacking their regular short corner striker, John Benedikz stepped up and, despite mis-hitting the ball so it only bobbled into the area, the ball was swept home past a stranded keeper by ever-predatory striker Jack Chalk. South continued to press for the remainder of the half and despite winning more short corners and creating several shots on target failed to increase their lead.

The second half started as the first had with South charging to the attack. The ball was collected by CM Andy Kennedy and moved down the right hand side through James Bridge, David Bridge and Wilco Dijkstra. Within thirty seconds South had won a free hit on the edge of Peterborough's D which was driven in with much more power then finesse by Benedikz before being touched on by Chalk and ultimately knocked into the goal by a Peterborough player.

At two-nil up South started to cruise and lost concentration a little and Peterborough showed strength by taking the opportunity to come forward. Although having more of the ball in this period, Peterborough could not make inroads into the South D. The back line of Ky Ho, Will Marston, Andrew Pounce and John Benedikz kept most of what came at them away. When they did get through the defence, keeper Will Benedikz came out, and although the ball was lifted over the on-rushing keeper, he managed to deflect it on to the post.

Peterborough's only goal came from a similar position as South's second. Following a string of short corners and free-hits from just outside the circle, one ball was touched into the D from a free hit and smashed past the unsighted keeper.

Conceding a goal jolted South back to life and midfield pairing, James Bridge and Andy Kennedy, regained control and spread the ball down the wings through Dijkstra, Wong and Johnson. These crosses caused more confusion, despite the aggressive play of the Peterborough keeper, and centre forward Shantanu Golar was unlucky not to score when he struck the post. During the last five minutes South tired and Peterborough came forward again. Several shots were sent in on the South goal, to be confidently cleared by Benedikz (W). Peterborough also tried crosses which caused much confusion, but could not find their way past the defence, led by Benedikz (J) who showed a surprisingly cool head in taking his time to clear several loose balls to safety.

Solid in the centre of defence and stepped forward to take many of the defensive responsibilities of the central midfield players as they had tired towards the end of the game.
