M1 1-4 Horncastle Mens 1

The long trek to deepest Lincolnshire proved fruitless for Cambridge South as Horncastle gained revenge for defeat earlier in the season with a comprehensive four-one victory. However, the score was somewhat flattering to the home side as South did much of the attacking, and with a little bit more clinical finishing could have matched their opponents.

Defensive frailties that have dogged them for the past few games were in evidence for Cambridge South from the outset. Horncastle's attacks were initially kept at bay more by good fortune and some last ditch defending than anything else. It was no surprise however when Horncastle moved quickly into a two goal lead.

As has happened so many times this season, South played some of their best hockey when a few goals down. They created a number of half chances which were not taken, before Jan Maarten Hoes, their new Dutch forward, scored an excellent goal from the edge of the area.

It was thus with renewed confidence that South gathered at half time only two-one behind. Any optimism of a further fight-back in the second half was dashed within the first ten minutes of the re-start. Horncastle stretched their lead first through a beautifully lobbed goal by their centre forward, and then through a more simple affair a few minutes later. At four-one, the game as a contest was effectively over. The game now opened out with both teams going on all-out attack. It was surprising that no further goals were scored, especially by South, who did much of the pressing without gaining any reward.

For beleaguered skipper Chris Graveling, only the promising play of the new forward line provided any consolation after another morale-sapping defeat.
