M2 3-2 St Ives Mens 5

This was a lively top of the table clash between two well matched teams, won narrowly by the home side. Cambridge South took an early lead as Dan Adlington, playing his best game to date, latched on to a loose ball by the far post to fired confidently home. A second followed soon after as a speculative Lockhart effort evaded all defenders to go straight in from the top of the D. Through the first half the home team played good hockey, controlled mainly by the returning Vincent Korstanje, and using the width of the pitch well through wings Lockhart and Greaves. St Ives snatched one back with one of their few shots after a swift counter attack. Keeper Tim Poole managed to thwart most attacks before a shot could be made.

St Ives got an equaliser soon after the break, during their best period of play, as South seemed to lose shape. Further St Ives goals were only prevented by never-say-die tackling from Devereux, Black and Bailey in particular. Nevertheless, South continued to have the more promising attacks with Andy Lewis and Dan Adlington, supported by Keith Simpson and Tim Waller in midfield, frequently getting into the D.

Substitutions midway through the half steadied the ship and the winner came from a Barton special as he joyously hammered the ball into the net from distance. More goals could have come, particularly from the numerous well worked short corners, but it was not to be.

Overall, Cambridge South were deserved victors over the previously unbeaten league leaders. Korstanje won the Man of the Match award for his tireless and effective game at the heart of midfield, turning defence into attack time after time.
