M2 6-1 Ely City Mens 3

A fantastic spring, drifting into summer's, afternoon saw the Mighty Seconds at their very best.

A rousing team talk led by stand-in skipper Rob Barton lit the touch paper. Playing with the now-trademark fluency, complacency was their biggest enemy.

South started with purpose and verve, driven by a determined defensive display. All players here were resilient especially Ian Devereux, who was flawless.

Vincent Korstanje and Jonny Taylor soon reacquainted their superb understanding in midfield. Flanks led by Lewis on the right and the returning Pannu created dynamism for the front pairing of Barton and Adlington.

The first goal started from a through ball from Korstanje. Lewis picked up the pass and made space, skipping past a bewildered defender to head for goal. A smart call from Barton of "your goal" galvanised intent and Lewis blasted a rocket into the near-side of the goal.

Barton scored the second picking up a loose ball in the D and controlling with two touches, the first surprisingly good, to place cleanly wide of the keeper.

Stu Creed buried the next with his first touch after replacing Barton, with neat passing from Lewis and an excellent square ball from Adlington. A sublime substitution by Barton.

Correctly and sportingly, the opposition umpire disallowed an Ely goal for feet in the D, Our umpire was unsighted. This typified the spirit of the game. Defensive players Bailey and Black were able to support the midfield admirably. Simpson was stoical as ever.

A Barton team talk urging the need for concentration brought more goals for South. Pannu, however, suffered for a Greavesian miss by being subbed. He was said to be aggrieved.

Korstanje, collecting his own fine shot, sent a searing effort past the keeper for number four from a short-corner. Barton soon gained his second: once clear, he looked the goalie in the eye, the goalie blinked and in went the fifth in the bottom left corner. The sixth and final goal came when Barton had a scrappy effort smothered only for Dan Adlington to snatch it in a manner of which the absent Greaves would have been proud.

A well taken goal by Ely meant they went home with something, but no points.

Man of the Match by some way was Ian Devereux, for a superb performance in defence, a job he has done for most of the season without complaint. So, on behalf of the team, thank you.
