Unpleasant Phonaesthetics

Morning found the team gathering early at Long Road for the trek to Wisbech.

On the previous trip to Wisbech, we had been treated to an entire Christmas dinner, crackers and all!

In a new division this year, we were unsure what to expect this time round. Last week were our promotion buddies, this week a team that have been in this league for several seasons.

South started the game full of energy and were all over Wisbech, maintaining control of the ball and keeping it high in their half.

Thursday’s training really hit home as South hunted down Wisbech players in twos, ensuring the ball never got far when they had possession.

Goal hungry, South won a short which resulted in a goal from a rebound within the first six minutes. In a show of confidence, the South defense pushed up to the halfway line, providing great backup. There was a point where both Roisin and Robyn went for a ball from Wisbech, both missing and resulting in a rogue runner behind the defense. Luckily, Loopy was keen to get her money’s worth and ran out to touch the ball, giving enough time for the defence to recover from the high altitude.

Unfortunately for Amalia, she was tackled by a football goal within seconds of joining the game. Luckily, she was given a pass for the lemon vote as it’s her birthday weekend!

Second half started with South three-nil up. A cracking mid-waist hit into the back of the net for Alice made the casual goal line steal from Alison forgivable.

Somehow, Hannah ended up sitting teddy bear-style in the middle of the pitch with a look of surprise, earning the lemon (second place…). Special mention to Kim for having an excuse of, "That’s just my resting bitch face," when the umpire questioned her attitude.

Every goal was well deserved, including a few text-book back post deflections behind the keeper from Sophie with great set ups from Robyn Murray, earning her the MoM vote this week. However, the Wisbech keeper kept fighting, including an impressive performance of a series of cat-like dives to save multiple times within twenty seconds, eventually clearing the ball away.

Teas wasn’t a Christmas dinner this time but did involve a lot of homemade cakes and a deep discussion of the definition and sounds of…words. Another game, another win, starting the season strong. Some might say it’s a bit early but, in the words of Robyn Mc, “WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! I SAID, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!”
