Happy Halloween

Robyn Rutter

It was a warm afternoon on Saturday when the L1s took on Alford & District 1s, after a very strong start to the season we went into the match pumped, confident and super keen as always – obviously extremely excited for our Halloween social later that night.

First half, A&D came out strong. A well drilled side they passed and moved well, but we were matching them for both skill and pace. It didn’t take long for A&D to get used to our bouncy pitch and figure out that the only way to get past our tight press was to hit the ball as hard as they could, bouncy bouncy, one of these hit outs jumped its way through to one of their high forwards who managed to pick the ball and have a shot on goal… ah man, it was 1-0 to A&D. Our umpires were confident and fair throughout the game but Robyn McL’s sassy mouth (naughty) got her in trouble a couple of times (sorry!), this lead to one of the reasons for her getting LOM, we’ll get to the other one later. Although we were 1-0 down we didn’t let our heads hang and with determination we held a lot of possession towards the end of the first half, we were unlucky not to get a goal but we knew it was only a matter of time.

Half time it was 1-0 to A&D, a positive half time talk by Kim and some jelly babies really got everyone energised, we weren’t going to go down without a fight! We came out fighting and a big five minutes saw us smash the back of the net twice. 2-1 to South!! Purple to purple, stick to stick, the girls worked hard and worked together to show A&D why we are top of the league. There were great balls distributed from all over the pitch, mids and forwards working their butts off to win those 50/50 balls, really great movement from everyone on the pitch. With the permanent loss of Badger, Blythe and Muzza stepped in to fill her shoes and did a sterling job. A massive shout out to Maddy who earned herself her first ever man of the match with super play upfront which saw her get a goal! A&D weren’t without their chances but Loopy made some great saves to keep them at bay, George and Roisin always holding their own at the back to keep them out of our D. At some point during one of their attacks Robyn McL fell over her feet, nowhere near the ball and landed on her bum securing her most of the LOM votes.

My hungover brain can’t remember which goals came in what order, so credit to the goal scorers; Sophie, Maddy & Amalia – absolutely fantastic. Jan’s weekly club preview a couple of weeks ago has jinxed Alice and hasn’t scored since ;) Maybe next week!

“We are top of the league, I said we are top of the league!”
