Hockey, Haverhill, Hangovers and Halloween

Izzy MacDonald-Parry

The day started with a couple of hangovers, a trip to McDonalds, two late cars and a distress call from Annie announcing she was lost. As the rest of the team assembled in the changing rooms at Haverhill, the two late cars set off after a demanded McDonald’s trip from Emma-Rose and Mel, who had gone a little bit too hard the night before.

After a bit of a lacklustre warm up (I am told; I hadn’t actually arrived at this point) the team got off to a sluggish start. Might be something to do with four members of the team turning up fifteen minutes before push back (but only two minutes before the scheduled push back, Izzy - please don't do that again!) It took Eimear a whole six minutes to score her first goal. Once we got away from the right sideline, which the midfield developed a close bond with, we created chances to score. However, we (I) struggled to convert. Towards the end of the first half, Eimear broke the cycle and scored again. Neither team conceded a short corner in the first half, which lead to Ellie announcing at half time that we should be more devious in the D while Emma-Rose had a lie down.

By the time the second half came around we had finally warmed ourselves up and started playing more like the team that we actually are. We started the second half strong, and both Alice and Izzy added a goal to the final score. We started to play it nicely down the wings and Annie, despite having run a 5k that morning, delivered ball after ball into the D and through the Haverhill defence. Haverhill came out stronger in the second half and really made our defence actually do some defending.

MoM was shared by New Jess and Slightly-Less-New Jess, for their solid play both in midfield and in defence. Mel’s hangover wore off and she picked up and cleared any balls that came her way. Lucy B remained solid on the left and Louise found her lungs when we conceded a short corner. The LOM nominations were close between Dani, who took out four players at once - a good effort for a small person really, Mel for being hungover, Annie for getting lost and Izzy for being late and some questionable driving. The overall winner however was Emma-Rose, with the most visible hangover. We ended the game with a four-nil win and everyone rushed home to do our Halloween make up and get ready for the social.
