It Was a Cold and Late Start at Long Road…

Lucy Bedford

The conditions were Arctic and this wasn’t helped by the 16.30 match not starting until 17.00. We were all very aware that this was a big game (and we were quite enjoying sitting at the top of the league) – the pressure was on.

Warming up was obviously required to be able to remove clothing. A very concerned (on the edge of tears) Katie G announced she believed her gum shield was now down the toilet. Discussions were had over whether it would have flushed and Alice was sent to find out. It was in her pocket. Cheers all around for safe teeth. LOM.

We started with high intensity, which was also required to ensure there was no frostbite. However, it soon became apparent that Royston were a match for us and definitely after our top of the league position. There was strong passing and runs on the right, led by Harriet in defence through to Katherine and Emma-Rose. This was equally matched on the left by Katie G with some fabulous skills and composure on the ball. An unfortunate break led to a sneaky goal from Royston just before the end of the half.

Returning to the pitch after half time with only ten players wasn’t an ideal start, but by-the-by we continued to push. We were blocked on the baseline on numerous occasions by Royston’s double marking. Izzy didn’t stop at having one goal disallowed, but went for the double. Let’s not go into detail (foot and shin incidents). Our defence was strong throughout the second half, with Jenny sweeping and great tackles and leads were made by Harriet (MOM).

RIP to Katie G’s toenail. Next time, more triangles. Safe to say we were left disappointed with the 1-0 loss.
