From the Sidelines

Despite results not going the right way for the L4s in recent weeks, the performances have given cause for great optimism.

Today's game saw the visit of Newmarket 3s to a chilly Long Rd. Early signs in the match suggested it could be a long day for the L4s, with some strong play from the visitors. Dogged defending from Ania and Laura kept the score at nil-nil for the first twenty minutes, ably assisted by Cassie in goal.

Despite some resolute defending, the opposition somehow managed to squeeze the ball through the feet of Cassie and take a one-nil lead.

While many teams would have let their heads drop, the L4s showed great determination to get back into the game. Alicia worked hard up front alongside Zara and Liz and created some strong chances, only to be foiled by the amazing keeper.

With Emily's introduction to the front line, there was a real threat from the L4s attack. However, the Newmarket keeper was on top form and produced some fine double saves.

The second half continued as the first had ended. Time and again, South broke through on goal only to find a keeper in top form to keep Newmarket in the lead.

Charlotte worked hard in the middle and caused problems for their defence throughout. Jasmine ran tirelessly all game, not allowing the opposition to settle on the ball. Nicole, Natalie and Tabatha battled hard alongside her to stop any threats. When the ball did get through, Hannah, Anouschka, Sammy, Ania and Laura were well positioned to cut out any chances.

Looking on from the sidelines, it seemed as though the only team likely to score was the L4s. Despite all the efforts, they just could not get the ball past the Newmarket keeper.

As the clock ran down, Newmarket broke and scored a second right at the final whistle to give a two-nil scoreline that did not reflect the way the game was going.

The L4s should not let their heads drop after this game. The improvement made since the start of the season has been remarkable. While there has been some brilliant individual performances each week, the team play has developed greatly and if they continue to do so, then results this season will start to go their way and it bodes well for next year.

In addition, happy birthday to both Zara and Sammy (who is gaining a strong reputation for tasty post-match treats).
