St Ives - A Goalkeeper's Perspective

Louise Robeson

Well, I think that the previous match reports have had little focus on the keeper's point of view - so, considering I got to do something this week, let’s include my thoughts. St Ives 4s was cold and wet but we went out fighting and grabbed ourselves a three-nil win, confirming our promotion (maybe I’ll get something more to do next season?)

St Ives got the first push back and before we knew it the ball was down in my D and I did get to make a save. However, it wasn’t long before we made some excellent passes down the right wing and Lucy Davidson scored our first goal within minutes of the starting whistle. Another pushback and St Ives put up a bit of a fight, meaning yet again (rare I know) I was making saves - which resulted in me re-injuring myself. They received a short corner but it was cleared before we knew it and we were on the attack yet again.

Soon Kath scored her cheeky goal giving us a two-nil half time advantage. Once we had had our team talk, the young and fast St Ives came back, running hard - even though it was our pushback, they were on a strong attack leaving our defence and myself (in pain) using a lot of force to stop them from scoring.

They yet again received a short corner but we were determined to keep the clean sheet and once again it was cleared. Up the other end in the D, we kept up the winning streak. After two short corners, Lucy Davidson put another one in the back of the net and we had the game in the bag.

Once the game had been played, it was time to decide on MoM and LoM. A well deserved MoM went to Sarah Holland for great interceptions on their breaks and some great supportive defending, helping myself out massively (with three votes). The team effort was reflected in the spread on MoM votes, with threee others players with two votes apiece (Hayley Pryke, Kath Atkin and Lauren Coates) and a single vote for Olivia Doggett. LoM, on the other hand, was awarded virtually unanimously to Kath Atkin for being a tad too keen on the pushbacks after she repeatedly tried to take them after we’d scored. Overall, an interesting match and well done to us - securing promotion with five games left to play!

A tad too keen to take pushbacks… (i.e. tried repeatedly to take them after we scored!)
