Men's 1sts stalemate with Long Sutton 2

After a heavy defeat the week before, Cambridge South 1st XI perhaps paid the price for an overly defensive approach to what should have been an easily winnable home fixture.

The lessons of the pre-season friendlies had obviously been well learnt by the squad, as from the outset it was clear that the defence was better organised. Each player stuck well to his role and Chris Graveling was in complete control as sweeper. Throughout the first half Long Sutton never once threatened the goal and the large majority of the play was in their half. South pressed hard but a couple of opportunities at goal were squandered.

Rick Erlebach played with his usual composure in the middle of the midfield, but as the second half progressed Cambridge South sensed that three points were perhaps going to elude them and started to move further up the field. This let the Long Sutton attack take advantage with a couple of quick breaks, but only two shots on goal resulted and these were easily dealt with by the keeper. The increased pressure up the field for Cambridge however was creating several more scoring chances but all too often the final ball was lacking the killer touch.

When the whistle blew it was clear from the reactions of both teams that a nil-nil draw does not suit the home side at this stage of the season. However Cambridge South should be pleased with a steady start and a clean sheet and look to build on this next week.
