Men's 2nds narrowly defeated by Long Sutton 3

After a somewhat fraught week, and late team changes, eleven players including just three second team regulars finally made it to Long Sutton. Cambridge South started well and quickly gelled as a team. Unfortunately the home side scored first with an unstoppable effort from close range.

South had an immediate response with the best move of the match straight from the restart. Andy Lewis got the ball to the lightning fast Alex Pooles, who crossed for centre forward Nick Wong to bury the ball joyfully into the net for the equaliser. Alex Pooles continued to be a threat with a couple of other efforts going narrowly wide.

Sadly Long Sutton retook the lead as their forward picked up a loose ball to slip it into the net. Close to half time Long Sutton finally scored from one of their many short corners, although the goal came from a deflected effort. South had their share of short corners and were unlucky to suffer some marginal decisions preventing scoring efforts. Andy Lewis, again putting in herculean work all around the pitch, put a shot just wide from another well worked short corner.

Long Sutton dominated the period after the interval but the South defence held firm, with Mark Freer and Ky Ho solid and Steve Lane and Sam Carr tenacious throughout. Defence was turned into attack with an increasing number of breakaways, often engineered by man of the match Chris Clegg, the linchpin in midfield.

The away team got back into the game from a good move up the centre of the pitch, from which skipper John Greaves took the ball around the side of the D and put in a deft reverse stick cross for the ever-sharp Alex Pooles to slot home. Soon after that South got a deserved equaliser after another flowing attacking move ended up with Greaves pouncing on a loose ball in the D to trickle the ball past the remaining defence for one of his usual jammy goals.

Sadly Long Sutton were able to come back once more and score the winner with a neat deflection form a quickly taken free hit.

All in all though it was a good performance, with all the team playing well and settling in remarkably quickly into their positions in an unfamiliar team.

For his courage in taking frequent hits to the body, cool tackling and excellent distribution of the ball to teammates.
