New Kids on the Block

South's indoor season started with a bang. The only side that we managed to beat last year came back with the same kids albeit a year older. This meant they were a heck of a lot better as well, with one individual of theirs, Sam Bushnell, scoring seven classy goals.

South started off pretty pedestrian but it was enough for the opening minutes to avoid any short corners or goals. When we did hit our stride we were picked off on the counter effortlessly. A defensive lapse, a short corner off the crossbar and another corner routine that captain Nev Warren could only feebly stop from crossing the line and the 3-0 score-line maybe flattered the opposition in the balance of play. Plucky resistance set-up a short corner that was stopped on the line and Jim Hockley stepped up to angle the resulting penalty stroke off the post and in.

More short corners were won by South and more goals were given on the counter. Walden were just a bit more "indoor savvy" and this led to mistakes from everyone on the team and a halftime score of 6-1 to Walden.

South started the second half badly and conceded a great one man dribble past the whole team by the aforementioned player. He really was on fire. Ollie Lamming and Alex Baekelandt scored quickly in succession as South managed to get a foot hold in the game as the Walden side tired from the growing pressure. It is disputed as to whether Ollie got another goal, but the umpires didn't count it it seems. Ah well, never mind.

South had a strong finish to the game by totally dominating the last five minutes of play. Captain Nev Warren made up for his early poor display defending short corners by skilfully reverse flicking the ball past the goalkeeper's shoulder and Ollie lamming pounced on defensive nervousness in the Walden backline to smash home another.

The rude awakening of the first half contributed to the result but the fight and prowess shown in the second half show that this year South can not only turn up, but maybe even compete. It took four games for South to score five goals in last years competition, just need to concede a few less. Notable mentions go to Owen Harrison and James Mathews who made sterling debuts in their first ever competitive indoor fixture!

Cruelly denied a hat-trick by mis-counting officialdom!

When the captain is wearing offensive clothing and not "wearing down the offence"! Big shorts are clearly not appropriate for indoor!
