And so it begins (again). After a pre-season break for the bank holiday weekend the M1s were ready for battle against a Hertford side who, having been promoted last year to Div 2S, proved a reasonable test.

Continuing to model a new and fluid 4-3-3 formation with only four of the ten outfield players having prescribed roles, the game brought many positives. South started brightly with Harry L finishing off a smart move down the left with a close deflection (assist Joel) in the first five minutes. Hertford came back strong and got back on level terms and somehow took the lead. To be honest, I can’t remember their goals; on the side line there were whispers of the sea parting but I think that was in reference to Spurs’ defence the following day rather than anything to do with South.

South started the second half brightly and dominated the play. A smart goal, again down the left after good work between Dave and Joel, brought South level and an even smarter goal after a reverse stick cross by Jim gave Harry his second of the game. I think video evidence is still being sought to check if the ball was touched but following Harry Kane’s example, Harry claimed it and walked off.

Positives - lots of energy, enthusiasm and at times good ball movement

To work on - retention at times, taking the sting out of the game; Harry’s control of the music; and winning, then converting, short corners

Post game - not sure what happened, I left and no one replied to my text (if you don’t like me just say guys…), Spurs lost on the Sunday and Harry Chalk announced he’d rather be James Milner than Jordan Henderson - read into that what you wish.

Finally, and by far most importantly, congratulations to the latest addition to South: well done Pearson (he was even back at training eight days post-birth and, I quote, ‘Having just eaten a massive burrito and chips!)

Good luck tomorrow, gents - I’m so excited to play in two weeks #ifselected
