Shoelaces - Check! Striker's Stick - Still Somewhere in Newmarket…

Emily Stevenson

After losing to Bury 3-1 in our pre-season friendly the L3s were hoping to claw back a win from Saturday's game.

A possible Lemon was decided quickly before the game when I realised an hour beforehand that I had left my stick in Newmarket last week, but thankfully Ani came to the rescue with a spare.

Quick check of Jasmine's shoelaces before we start? All ok.

It started well with confident passing between South and holding possession. Unfortunately our first attack broke down when I decided to throw my borrowed stick across the D for no apparent reason (Lemon secured). Despite being comfortable in our possession of the ball, Bury broke forward and took the lead one-nil.

South fought back well with great defense and midfield play which included Kath being on the receiving end of some colourful language.

Jasmine reties shoelaces.

Great play continued around the back setting up good opportunities down the wings yet Bury broke forward and scored again.

Strong attacks before half-time failed to find the net, including two short corner opportunities. After a halftime team talk powered by jelly babies and Tangfastics we had confidence going into the second half that we could pull it back from Bury.

In the second half South continued to make chances without finding the finishing touch. A late short corner for Bury, smashed into the corner, made the final score three-nil to Bury.

MoM went to Lou for a great game in goal and an amazing top corner save, and to Hannah for solid defensive plays and versatility after being pushed up into midfield too, due to a lack of subs. Lou may find herself there again if she can, in her own words, learn to keep her legs together.

Great work in defense & in your newfound role within midfield too!

Donning the pads once again when we had no keeper available & an awesome aerial save in the dying minutes of the game!

Left stick in Newmarket last week then proceeded to throw borrowed stick across the pitch for no reason (multiple times?)
