The Wisbech Wonderers

Hattie Stanley

We set out on our journey with the rumoured promise of extremely good teas awaiting us. What we weren’t prepared for was the long, eventful journey driving down bumpy roads surrounded by miles of pumpkin patch fields in what was described by Anne as ‘something out of a Tarantino film’.

After a bit of a rushed warm up and a discussion about my somewhat complex and over-detailed subbing strategy we started the game with a solid defence line, well positioned midfielders and fast, skilful forwards resulting in our first goal (set up by Cat and tapped into the goal by Lou) within what felt like the first few minutes. The team were communicating, playing more confidently and making some fantastic clean tackles.

Filled with confidence from our quick first goal, the team worked together to use space on the pitch and found a way to send the ball around the Wisbech players into the D. After a stick tackle from the opposition South moved quickly with the short corner and scored our second goal. There was some confusion at this point as to whether South had actually scored, as from my position it looked like quite a battle between Lou and the goalie, who was now on the ground, but the umpire confirmed that the ball had crossed the line.

The third goal came from Alexine from the top of the D and the Wisbech defenders didn’t have time to think before the ball sailed past the goalie. The first half finished with the score three-nil to South.

In the second half Wisbech changed their strategy and used the left side of the pitch to get the ball down to their forwards. However, each time they were unable to get past Lauren Eddy who managed to easily take the ball and send it straight back to our forwards.

Wisbech definitely ‘upped their game’ and unfortunately we weren’t able to get past their defence in the second half to score another goal.

I want to say a big thank you to Guy for helping with our sub schedule and to Michael and Andi, who have adopted the role of the L4 supporters.
