Blinded by the Light…

Howard Steed

The captain's nagging email clearly did the trick this week, with everyone arriving on time with one notable exception…VC Shahzad…for which this week's LoM was subsequently awarded! The opposition were also punctual and immediately got stuck into their warm-up routine. South responded with an equally vigorous routine led by Doc Marshman.

The match got underway with both teams showing commitment and intensity. Kettering seemed the more confident side however and it wasn't long before they converted one of a series of short corners. Shortly afterwards a pass from midfield found the Kettering captain unmarked on the edge of the South D. His first attempt on goal was saved heroically by keeper Micheal G, but alas the attacker was able to beat the floored keeper from the deflection.

Unbowed, South held on for the remainder of the first half, producing several counterattacks but nothing that really troubled the Kettering defence.

The second half continued in the same vein, but it wasn't long before the away team managed to break through on the right wing and found the back of the net with a blistering shot. This was followed shortly afterwards by a fourth from a penalty flick, despite some confusion amongst the home team as it had initially appeared be a deflection from Ky's stick on to his head. After some discussion, the umpires agreed that a flick should rightly be awarded for an earlier offence in the D.

Despite some promising counterattacks, a clearly tiring South team were unable to close the gap and it is was the away team that sealed the game with a further two goals.

Pip Ho was a well deserved MoM for some solid tackling and pin-point accurate passing from defence.

There were several strong contenders for LoM including the South captain for a 'blinded by the sun' collision with Stu C as the latter attempted to clear the ball from defence, but VC Shahzad was narrow winner for his tardiness!
