Men's 2nds lose to St Ives 4

South were not overawed by St Ives's recent run of success and snatched an early two goal lead, both from short corners. The first came from the Greaves-Lewis routine, with John Greaves's near post effort rebounding off the keeper for Andy Lewis to smash the ball in for an unstoppable goal. The second was a result of some Mis magic, as Will Marston fed Raph Mis the ball for him to befuddle the defence before calmly placing it in the net from distance.

St Ives were stung into action and managed to get back on equal terms as their experienced midfield and central attackers got into gear with smooth passing moves carving through the away defence to score twice.

After half time St Ives dominated but South battled away, with John Benedikz again leading the back line by example from sweeper. Unfortunately, South were unable to create many chances as attacks fizzled out before getting into the danger area all too often, in spite of Mis's and Lewis's best efforts to get through and Tim Waller's and Will Marston's battling in midfield.

The home team had most of the pressure and got three more goals as South started to lose shape and run around after the ball. Towards the end South came back into the game as St Ives got a little complacent and were unlucky not to get another goal from an excellent Lewis free hit, which was turned into the net by Neil Sneade from close range only to be ruled out on a (correct) technicality.

This was Raph Mis's final game for the South 2nds and he again showed his blend of skills, commitment, full use of the murkier end of the Belgian language and magic touch near goal. He will be missed. Thanks.

The performance of the team will give South hope for avoiding relegation; it may all come down to the final game with Spalding (Editor's note: the 2nds remain in 10th, one point and place outside the relegation zone).
