Men's 2nds lose to St Ives 4

The first league game of the season was an even and open contest, with the home team coming close to snatching a deserved draw.

All the Cambridge South goals were bagged by skipper John Greaves, scoring his first hat-trick for the club. The first was from a well worked short corner routine, nudged in at the near post. Sadly, St Ives then got themselves into the lead with two good efforts via fine attacking play.

After half time St Ives dominated, getting two further goals, but the home team kept hope alive with two more Greaves efforts, one from distance, blasting through a melee of players, and his third from a deft dummy (ie total mishit), which dribbled into the net past a confused St Ives keeper. South were unlucky not to get a draw, as they poured forward in search of the equaliser.

"Although we lost, there were many encouraging signs in both defence and attack, with all players in the reshaped team renmaining committed, positive and alert throughout. There were some good moves, decisive defending, and intelligent passing."
