Men's 1sts beat Cambridge City 4

Cambridge South Mens 1sts, sponsored by PwC, continued their good start to the season by sweeping aside Cambridge City 4ths, 3-1.

The first half started evenly but City gradually began to assert themselves on the game and should have scored a few goals before half time. Fortunately their strikers couldn't hit a barn door for toffee and at half time it was 1-0 to South courtesy of a reverse stick finish from Rob Garrett after being set up by Mark Reilly.

City pulled a goal back early in the second half after a goal mouth scramble in the South D, but equality only lasted a couple of minutes. A quick break from the South midfield up the right and Matt Murray was put through on goal. A clinical finish and South were back in front.

City continued to attack and the South goal was under almost constant pressure but the back line of John Benedikz, Rob Hay, Chris Graveling and the 'Thorpedo' was in fine form. Goalkeeper Steve Parker was commanding in the D and demonstrated his value to the South cause by saving a flick from ex-South player Ryan Thomas. Maybe he's regretting that defection away from us now…?

Mid way through the half, Carey summed up the fighting, never-say-die attitude of the South players in a confrontation with a City forward – "Do that again and I’ll shove this stick up yer arse!"

This hard work from South was rewarded when Chris Baker scored the third, and best, goal of the game, completing a very good win for South.
