Men's 1sts smash Cambridge Nomads 3

Cambridge South demolished Cambridge Nomads 3rds 7–1 to move three points clear at the top of the table. This South team has steadily improved as each week has gone by and today Nomads had no reply to the sharp, fluid passing of South and the intelligent movement in attack. Nomads struggled to create any clear opportunities against the meanest defence in the league.

At the start of the day South and Nomads were joint top of the league, each with three wins out of three. With this in mind it was unsurprising that the start was cagey. The opening fifteen minutes were evenly matched, with neither team creating any clear cut opportunities.

The deadlock was broken on fifteen minutes when Chris 'Durex' Baker struck a free hit from the edge of the D goal-ward and Forrest deflected the ball over the keeper's left leg. This was his third goal of the season and, true to form, the ball barely touched the backboard as it trickled over the line…!

The goal proved to be the spark that South needed and a few minutes later South extended their lead. Durex got his first goal of the game, striking the ball in directly from a short corner. Nomads got a goal back through a deflected hit from the edge of the D (showing Forrest how it's done – this one hitting the back of the goal with definite purpose). But Rowland made the score 3–1 at half time with a wonderful reverse stick sweep into the far corner of the net. Murray made good work down the left, beating a couple of defenders before crossing for Rowland to slot home.

At half time, coach Shaun Park made some suggestions and South altered the formation accordingly, pushing Matt Readman in front of the defence and moving Durex further forward. This proved to be a master stroke in tactics as the second half saw South dominating and scoring at will. At the back, the South defence was spreading the ball left and right with ease – full backs Benedikz and Hay were the starting points of many of the South attacks.

With Reilly and Forrest combining well down the left, and Murray and Creed making good work down the right, large gaps were opening up in front of the Nomads defence. This created many opportunities for the South midfield. Within ten minutes of the start of the second half, Durex had completed his hat trick, on both occasions finding no difficulty in sliding the ball into the gaping hole left between the Nomads keeper's legs.

Midway through the second half, Matt Readman got his first goal of the season (on his first league start). Making another penetrating run deep into the Nomads defence, he slipped the ball to Forrest. Forrest managed to eventually knock the ball goal ward past the keeper and Readman snaffled it in at the near post under pressure from a Nomads defender.

South started to sit back a bit from here, letting Nomads pansy around with the ball for a while. But there was little danger of Nomads scoring with Thorpey in commanding form at the back. Graveling was so confident in his team mates ability that he completely ignored his duties at left back and decided to stroll nonchalantly around the pitch (seems to be something of a habit these days…), but even with three against two, it was Thorpey and Readman that came out with the ball.

At the other end Stu 'Killer' Creed had an excellent opportunity at the top of the Nomads D and he took it with great enthusiasm. The ball didn't go very far, but the Nomads defender fell like the proverbial sack of spuds! Fortunately the battle hardened 'Bruiser' Murray was on hand to advise (apparently the victims cheekbones are quite prominent anyway, so the extra swelling was… er… "hardly noticeable". Provided you’re more than 100 yds away.)

Ten minutes from the end, Murray set up Durex for his fourth of the game to finish off South's biggest win for, oh, at least thirty-two league games (that’s as far back as this reporter knows about).
