Men's 2nds beaten by Cambridge City 5

Cambridge City approached this local derby with a high level of commitment and a clear game plan that Cambridge South were unable to match.

City took the lead early on with a classy move which gave them confidence to spread the ball around. This lead to a second goal via an unmarked attacker after robbing South of possession.

The home side were still in the game with Peter Carey driving forward and Suk Pannu finding space to trouble the City defence. Unfortunately, CSouth never really found the killer ball into the D. They did get a goal back through the old Greaves-Lewis short corner routine, with Andy Lewis's blistering shot giving the City keeper no chance.

No further goals came in the second half, although John Greaves came close with a couple of efforts well saved by the keeper. South fashioned some good moves and were able to pass around the back more often than in previous games but City were always harder and quicker in the tackle, and posed the greater threat.

The final minutes were dominated by City, who almost scored from a series of short corners, which the defence heriocally repelled, including one quite stupendous flying save from keeper Lino Di Lorenzo.

South 2nds will have to rediscover their battling spirit for the whole of a seventy minute game and work out better ways to fashion more scoring chances if they are to avoid being sucked into the nether regions of Div 5NW.
