Men's 3s Too Strong for Bourne 5s

Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, began the second half of their Division 7NW campaign with a comfortable win over Bourne's 5th team.

South, who were incorporating three debutants into the team, started very strongly, dominating territory and possession and forcing the Bourne keeper and defence into a number of scrambling clearances.

A deserved lead was eventually secured midway through the half when one of the new boys, Leo Tomita, found James Bridge with a free hit. Bridge received the ball, turned and shot home into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

The advantage was doubled in the opening minute of the second half as centre forward Eliot Read's persistence in the D was rewarded, flicking a loose ball past the keeper after defenders had blocked his initial two attempts.

Bourne were struggling to clear their half for periods of the game but when they did manage to get over the halfway line, their attacking was done with co-ordination and at speed, especially through their pacy right winger. One such right sided counter-attack, nine minutes into the half, earned a free-hit just outside the circle. This was fired in towards the centre-forward, who added a sharp goalwards deflection which flicked the inside of the post on its way in, giving South keeper Jon Price little chance.

South were not phased by this set back and within five minutes captain Wilco Dijkstra had reasserted the two goal gap, seizing on a loose ball on the edge of the circle and driving in a shot, which took a deflection on its way past the visiting keeper.

With this cushion the final twenty minutes of the match were played out in reasonable comfort by the home side, to secure an upbeat start to 2006
