Men's 1sts beat Wisbech Town 3

Cambridge South Mens 1sts, sponsored by PwC, laboured to a 2-1 win over mid-table Wisbech Town 2nds, courtesy of two goals from Lukas Snetler.

The home side struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and were 1-0 down at half time from a penalty stroke early in the game.

Freshly-promoted South gradually got into the game, though, and dominated long periods of the second half. As they searched for the equaliser holes were left at the back that Wisbech almost capitalised upon with some quick counter attacks. But it was the home side that next found the back of the net, Lukas Snetler sweeping home a loose ball from a short corner.

From here there was only one team that looked like scoring and in the closing minutes Lukas Snetler claimed a second by cleverly steering a Kevin Rowland cross into the goal.

"We were far from our best today but it’s good to keep the pressure on for the final game of the season," said vice captain Rob Garrett. Captain Chris Baker was keen to praise the side's never say die attitude. "Last week we showed excellent battling qualities to clinch promotion and this week we weren't playing well but we never gave up and got the goals that we deserved", he said.

When the full 4NW results were published, South were disappointed to learn that leaders March Town II had gone goal crazy, winning 14-1 at lowly Bourne III. The fenland side have now added a superior goal difference to their three point lead prior to the final day meeting of the two teams, meaning that South will need to win by a number of goals if they want to overhaul their opponents for the title.
