Men's 2nds draw with Bury St Edmunds 3

Another warm day, another reshaped team, another lively friendly.

Bury took the lead against the run of play from a scrambled effort midway through the first half. Their combination of high quality central spine and skilful youngsters did cause problems, although apart from this effort the Cambridge South defence stood firm, with sweeper Steve Riches and Matt Kern prominent.

South came back after half time, achieving dominance through wise use of the width of the pitch stretching the opposition and keeping the ball away from the Bury playmaker. A variation on the short corner routine led to the equaliser, as Rob Barton's shot from far side of the D found skipper John Greaves loitering close to the post to steer the ball into the net. The home team then went ahead from another short corner, this time it was Barton pouncing to scramble the ball over the line.

Sadly Bury were able to equalise late on as they poured forward. There were penalty appeals at both ends and Andrew Matthews managed to get his body in the way of a high cross, only to get a nasty bruise on the chest. Dedication over the call of duty.

South kept to the task, driven by Steve Fleck and Gareth Hebbron in midfield, and were unlucky not to snatch a winner.
