Men's 1sts draw with Rutland 1

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, battled to a 2-2 draw against East League new boys, Rutland.

Only a single point separated the two teams in the league and both knew that a loss would leave them perilously close to the relegation zone. The game was played at a quick pace and soon settled into a pattern of Rutland putting pressure on South, with the visitors hitting back on the break.

The visitors took the lead mid way through the first half through Mike Thorogood when the ball broke loose in a short corner routine. Rutland continued to pressure the visitor's goal but the South defence was solid and held on strongly.

The second half saw Rutland stepping up their efforts to get the equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded with a goal. The visitors hit back, though, and took the lead through captain Chris Baker. Cambridge had further opportunities to score - hitting the post on one occasion - but were unable to increase their lead. At the other end goal keeper Steve Parker was in fine form and made some excellent saves to keep the home strikers at bay.

The tension grew as the game went on and the final 10 minutes were a fraught affair as Rutland desperately tried to find the equaliser. This eventually came from a short corner, with only four minutes to go.
