League Leaders Have Too Much for South

Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, came away empty-handed from their visit to unbeaten league leaders Wisbech Town Men's 5ths.

Missing several regular players in midfield and defence, and fielding Phil Le Gouais in his first match as a stand-in goalkeeper this season, South took time to find their shape. A strong Wisbech side were moving the ball impressively as South were put under early pressure.

The opening goal came from a Wisbech short corner, as a powerful shot hit Neil Sneade's stick before spinning over and creeping into the corner of the goal. Two further goals from Wisbech, including another from a short corner, left South 3-0 down before some determined attacking saw South claim a goal back through Simon Ta before the interval.

Finally beginning to find their rhythm, a more aggressive South side opened the second half by taking the game to Wisbech. Twice South hit the post and also had the ball in the back of the Wisbech goal, but unfortunately the umpire had already blown for a short corner. South's hopes of a revival were frustrated when another short corner for Wisbech resulted in a fourth goal.

A much improved second half performance from South ultimately couldn't outweigh Wisbech's greater attacking proficiency at set pieces, but South can take encouragement from the strength of their play when they took the game to the opposition.
