Men's 2nds beat Newmarket 1

Cambridge South arrived at Newmarket ready to do battle with the league leaders, and after a bright start, were unlucky to go behind, as Newmarket scored following a defensive slip, which the defender claimed was due to "My stick getting stuck in the astro". Fortunately the away team equalised shortly after, following good attacking pressure leading to a short corner. The ball had come out to Joe Williamson, whose through ball into the D rebounded off the keeper to the loitering John Greaves. He slipped a neat cross to Russell Johnson, waiting at the far post a foot off the goal line, who made no mistake.

Newmarket had their moments, but the away defence were up to the job, only getting through once, with Andy Bleach calmly deflecting a goal bound effort off the line.

After half time the midfield dynamos of Stuart Creed, Russell Johnson and James Pope continued to stretch the opposition with their pace and skill, and it was no surprise when a Pope foray into the danger zone ended with a through ball to Rob Barton, who finished with a trademark reverse stick flourish. 2-1 became 3-1 as Barton acted as provider for Russell Johnson's second of the game. A Barton dribble and shot was poached on the line by Johnson, who was of course "only there to help".

Newmarket were getting ragged, and their often superior hockey skills were negated by desperation. This enabled South to set up a fourth goal. Jan Brynolffsen sent yet another of his excellent long passes from left back up to Rob Barton, who drew the defender masterfully before slotting the ball to John Greaves. He took the ball into the D and smashed it into the top corner past a despairing keeper to end the best move of the game.

The home team were not finished yet, and snatched two more goals, one from a well worked short corner and the other from a breakaway move, to set up a pulsating finish, watched by the unfortunate skipper Greaves who had received a nasty knock on the head off a Newmarket stick. Luckily it didn't hit anything important.

South defended heroically, as Andy Bleach and keeper Jon Price made last ditch saves to prevent an equaliser.

Victory over the dominant league leaders was sweet, in a game played in good spirit. It showed that South 2nds need fear no-one in 5NW, and if the good team play, commitment, and energy, can be sustained then we can look forward positively to the rest of the season.
