Men's 2nds beat Long Sutton 3
Revenge was sweet after Cambridge South overcame a depleted Long Sutton team who had snatched a 1-0 victory earlier in the season. The home team made a confident aggressive start and were soon ahead through a scrambled effort down to the persistence of skipper John Greaves. His first effort in a crowded D was saved but he was not to be denied, and pounced on the rebound. South went further ahead from an Andy Lewis free hit, which John Greaves directed sweetly into the far corner from a narrow angle.
2-0 became 3-0 as Simon Harper finished off another melee with a poacher's goal from short range. Throughout the game Long Sutton had some breakaway attacks, but they were snuffed out by the home defence before getting into the danger zone, with all the back line helping one another well and the returning centre back Dave Monck booming the ball back up field with purpose, and Gareth Hebbron tigerish as usual.
The home team kept attacking using both wings and the centre with everyone playing their part, and Kevin Rowland playing a number of roles well. Suk Pannu particularly was at the centre of much of the play.
Long Sutton got a goal back from their only short corner with a fine shot, but this only inspired South to respond with their fourth, from yet another short corner. Simon Harper again providing the finish as the first shot came back to him at the top of the D for him to crash the ball home calmly.
There should have been more goals in the second half with Barton, Lewis and Greaves all denied by good goalkeeping and defensive heroics on the goal line.
All in all a deserved win, with occasional slackness and lack of penetration on short corners outweighed by general superiority in most areas of the pitch.
A good start to the second half of the league season.
