Men's 2nds smash Wisbech Town 4

Cambridge South were keen to reassert the rightful order of things against a Wisbech team who had inflicted a heavy defeat on South earlier in the season, and an excellent defensive display in this return game did the trick.

South were on top from the start. Then Rob Barton scored. A neat move from the right wing as John Greaves fed the ball to emerging midfield general James Pope, who took it upfield, before passing to Barton, who juggled the ball onto his strong (i.e. not reverse stick, though this definition is arguable in Rob’s case) side, and shot confidently in. 1-0.

Then Rob Barton scored again. This time form a textbook Andy Lewis cross from the left.

Wisbech then woke up and put considerable pressure on the away defence for 15 mins before netting from a deflected shot past the unlucky and otherwise unbeatable goalkeeper Jon Price from one of many short corners. Apart from this the defence driven on fiercely by Jan Brynjolffssen kept Wisbech away from the danger area calmly.

Further incident involved Wisbech nearly scoring again as an anonymous South defender admitted to "losing his bearings" close to his own line, and Rob Barton was denied his hatrick as a rasping shot hit the post.

South regained the initiative as Andy Lewis put in a deceptive cross shot from long range from a free hit, which perplexed the defence to make it 3 - 1 at half time.

In the second half, the new and youthful attacking trio of Lewis/Barton/Greaves began to run riot. John Greaves got on to the score sheet from his customary two yard range as he stabbed the ball in to the net after a great run into the D by James Pope whose shot was deflected by a defender to the lurking skipper. 4-1. Barton then almost got his hatrick as Lewis slipped the ball into Barton who ignored a foul on him to shoot into goal just as the whistle went for the foul.

Luckily there was more to come as… Rob Barton scored again. This time with James Pope assisting, followed shortly after as Rob Barton scored again. This last one was form the best move of the game as Andy Bleach intercepted, passed up to John Greaves; cross to Andy Lewis; pass to Rob Barton; goal; 6-1. Both finishes from Barton's "weak" side, the reverse stick sweep.

There could have been more as Andy Lewis himself shot against a post, and other chances were saved by last ditch Wisbech defence.

A successful afternoon in the fens.
