Men's 1sts lose to Ely City 1

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, met table-toppers Ely City and succumbed to a narrow 2-0 reverse. Ely have started the season on a flier, netting 24 times in their 3 previous games and so Cambridge knew they were in for a tough match. But this season they know they can beat the best in this league and were determined not to give Ely an easy ride.

With a hard-fought, battling performance Cambridge were close to coming away from this game with a point. Ely dominated possession in the first half and scored from a short corner, but otherwise created few clear-cut chances. 'keeper Lino Di Lorenzo, a late call-up from the 2nds, acquitted himself well and helped keep the Ely forwards out.

Cambridge came out fighting in the second half and for 20 minutes were on top, passing well and keeping Ely on the back foot. The best chance fell to Lukas Snetler but his powerful shot to the corner was pushed away well by the Ely 'keeper. As Ely came back into the game they managed to grab a second goal near the end.Captain Chris Baker was disappointed not to take anything away from the game, commenting "We came up against an on-form and well organised Ely team today. We did well to contain them in the first half, but the second goal killed the game".
