Men's 4ths draw with Newmarket 2

Newmarket turned up with a young and energetic side. The game started at a fast pace and Cambridge South 4ths, sponsored by PwC, went ahead after about 5 minutes through a free hit taken at the half way line found Kevin Pride, who finished with aplomb. Newmarket picked up the pace and dominated the midfield as well as creating attacks from the back through a particularly skilful and quick player. South's experienced defence of Jim Sutcliffe, Ian Glover, David Bridge, Ky Ho, alongside ‘keeper Shahbaz Ali, held their own for a good 15 minutes, with Shahbaz making many good stops. But Newmarket's superior possession and pace eventually gave them the equaliser they deserved. Newmarket then went 1-2 up through a unusual goal, the attacker accidentally looped his shot towards goal, in an attempt to try to push it away with the stick above his head, Shahbaz managed only to push it into his own net!

An interval re-arrangement of South’s resources saw them begin to take charge of the midfield in the second period, with the Newmarket's defence was made to work. Two more strikes from deadly Kevin Pride made it 3-2 to South, his first hat trick of the season. South should have finished the game off with another goal, but it was Newmarket who made the most of a confused situation where a short corner was initially awarded and then changed to be a free hit just outside the D. South's defence was still lining up when a shot came in and a Newmarket forward made the most of the situation and it was 3-3.

Newmarket missed at least a couple of chances with an goal open and South also had their fair share of chances. 3-3 seemed a fair result. A well earned draw as the team showing good fighting spirit, togetherness and can even score goals.
