Men's 1sts beat Ely City 1

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, maintained fourth spot in Division 3NW by beating Ely in a highly paced and closely fought match on Saturday.

It was an open and free-flowing game with both sides on the attack in the first few minutes, but it was South that took the lead through Rob Garrett. South then doubled their lead through a Chris Graveling short corner after 15 minutes before Ely came back into the game when a short corner deflected into the South net. They came close to equalising shortly afterwards, but were denied by the post. Mark Taylor then restored Cambridge South's 2 goal lead, just before half time after diving to turn in a Rob Garrett cross.

The second half saw Ely press forward in search of goals and mid-way through the half they broke through the South defence twice in 5 minutes to level the game at 3-3. With both teams making opportunities it was anyone's game. However it was the home side that managed to snatch all the points, when Mark Taylor found the back of the net with only 5 minutes to play. At 4-3 Ely never gave up and it was only thanks to a fantastic rearguard action and some superb saves from ‘keeper Steve Parker that allowed South to be victorious.

Captain Chris Baker said "Cambridge South secured an excellent victory against a strong Ely team winning 4-3. Ely fought back from 3 -1 down but South showed steely resolve to win the match 4-3".
