Men's 1sts beat Cambridge University 3

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, defeated local rivals Cambridge University Thirds on Saturday. Cambridge South had lost 3 of their previous 4 games as their mid-season form began to stutter but this victory over the team in second place in the league puts them back on course for a top-4 finish.

The game was played at a high level with both sides passing the ball around well, much to the appreciation of the fans on the sidelines. It was a tight game, though, with both defences doing well to keep the opposition at bay. It was the away side that got the breakthrough, scoring from a short corner as the ball was deflected beneath goalkeeper Steve Parker.

The home side were not put off their stride, though, and upped the tempo in the second half as they searched for a way back into the game. That way came from the season's top scorer - Mark Taylor. An excellent first-time strike on the run from Eliot Read's cross put them level, and a neat finish from close range gave them the lead late in the game.

With the home side pushing forward, University were able to break quickly and put pressure on the South defence but despite some good passing moves, they were unable to fashion many clear-cut opportunities. And on one of the few occasions that they did get through to goal, Steve Parker pulled off an excellent save to deny the goal.

After the game, Captain Chris Baker commented that "This was one of our best victories this season".
