Men's 4ths beat St Neots 5

Cambridge South 4th team, sponsored by PwC, started the game well and dominated possession for the first 20 minutes, winning a number of short corners and free hits just outside the D. Alas, no real clear cut chances were created and most shots found a St. Neots player in its way. The St Neots side did get the odd break, but nothing serious until 25 minutes in where a well struck short corner gave them the lead and the more confidence to mount further attacks.

In the second half, it was clear that St Neots wanted to play even more on the break, instead of 1 player 'hanging around further up', they started having 2. CSHC 4ths however equalised early. A short corner shot struck by James Raikes from the top of the D was deflected by James Hodge for his first goal for the club. James H delivered a classical right-winger’s performance by going round the defenders numerous times on the outside and occasionally even drifting in.

The remainder of the half was uneventful until a rowdy crowd of CSHC 2nds players turned up in the rain to 'cheer' the 4th team on. Mostly due their support and a very small portion due to James Raikes' tactical nous, CSHC 4th team took the lead. JR not only invited Ian Glover, who played at sweeper to 'come up to attack', but even completely foxed the opposition by varying his short corner routine and passed the ball to Ian G, who swept the ball into the net and made the score 1-2 with only 5 minutes remaining. Like James earlier, it was Ian’s first goal for the club.

[Ed adds – this was the 4ths last league game of the season. They have finished with 8 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats, which is a very decent return for a brand new team. Maybe a promotion push next year?]

A number of important defensive clearance, including one 3-on-1 that he stopped. And then he scored the winning goal. What more could one want?

On general principle [Ed - Hmm. Somehow Ron's handbags with an opposition player have got forgotten, have they? I think a recount is in order]
