We made some chances, but they made theirs count

Sandy Taylor

This was one of those rare matches where not only do we play 3 times in the season due to the small division, but we both won our previous home games...2-1 either way as I remember. We came into this one hoping to take the crown in this final clash of the year.

Things started well as we slid into the heavy pressure style we've been developing, but St Neots fought back hard and managed to apply the same pressure in a series of attacks in our half. Eventually they found a way into the D with a smartly-taken free hit just outside slightly throwing off our marking, with one of their players well placed for a strong hit at the net before we could get back. Unfortunate, but can't knock it on their side.

Further scrappiness led to something similar again, but spirits weren't low going into half time. Nobody doubted we could take the game right back at them, and we did! Not only did we tidy up our marking game leaving the Saints unable to find an opportunity even on a breakaway, but we dominated possession and scoring attempts, winning the ball back over and over again on every loss.

All that said, we made one major omission: the ball never actually went in their net. We had chances - scrappy attacks in the goal mouth, crosses across the D, short corners and more, but none quite going in. Our maybe very best attempt came at the very end of the game as all 10 outfield players executed our last short corner, a hard hit connecting well and coming in for a perfect deflection off Rich's run into the left post, but alas further deflected off the backline by an equally-perfectly placed defender's stick. Thus we were denied even the traditional 2-1 score sheet.

Still, there was plenty to be pleased with and spirits were high as we enjoyed the traditional St Neots pizza and tea. Baz received MoM for his incredible work rate winning the ball back over and over again on every opposition break. Rob got LoM for...I'm not sure.

Something to do with "Traitor" or "The Dive" [editor's note: no I don't know what this means either, I think the first one is a TV show]
