Men's 3rds v : Awaiting Result

Revenge was so nearly gained as Cambridge South almost claimed the victory over a team who had beaten them with a late flurry of goals in the earlier fixture between the sides.

South had most of the pressure in the first half with some great moves from all angles. Stuart Creed in particular, rising from his sickbed, made numerous forays up the wing from right back. The wide midfielders, Andy Lewis and Rupert Espley, had their moments too but too often the final ball into the D didn't find a black shirt.

The deadlock was broken when John Greaves took a pass ten yards out and confidently slotted the ball past the diving keeper just inside the post. Mark Pears followed up soon after with a dribble and shimmy in front of goal which left the keeper bamboozled. Two-nil.

The second half was similar, with South maintaining the pressure, forcing short corners but sadly no more goals. The home team continued to spread the play and the general standard of passing and team play was excellent, with the midfield and attack combining well. The defenders joined in from time to time, with Jim Thorpe and James Lee in particular driving forward before being banished to their rightful positions as St Neots responded.

Late in the second half, as South tired, St Neots managed to grab one back with a well taken short corner move and right at the end, as the adreniline flowed, they snatched the equaliser through a rapidly taken free hit, whilst South were recovering their breath.

For sixty minutes the 3rds had played well enough to win convincingly over a decent St Neots side, whose never say die attitude eventually paid dividends and proved the point that possesion and passing are necessary but not sufficient.

Four games to go; two more wins needed to ensure safety.
